THE IMPORTANCE OF SALES
I remember when I was younger around 6-8 years old.. The school sent us home with candy to sale for a fund raiser. It was like 40 or 80 dollars worth of candy I believe. Anyway at the time things must have been good at home. Because my parents just wrote a check for the total for me to submit to the school. Anyway I don’t know what sparked the Idea but when ever my mom or dad went to the doctor or anything I would bring the candy with us to sell.. I told my mom I wanted to save up and buy some dark wing duck toys. At that moment a entrepreneur was born. She taught me how to save money.. My father opened me up a bank account. So eventually I ended up selling all the candy and could not believe how much money I had. At that point I no longer wanted the dark wing duck toys anymore. For a few reasons I had earned my money and did not want to blow it all on dark wing duck. My mom encouraged me to continue saving..
Now around 7th grade I convinced my father to invest in my incense business, incense you know the stick looking thing you light fire to and makes your house smell good. Anyway I packaged them and was ready to take on the world. I put 10 per pack and was going to sell for a 1 dollar.. I knew this was going to work. And I was going to school downtown Newark, NJ where their was alot of foot traffic. I could walk around and sell my incense after school. You would think some people would give a dollar just because it was a kid. Nah hell no, NOT these miserable folks.. I look back and realize those were some broke cold mofo’s who would not even spend 1 dollar with a kid. Anyway that business failed horribly.
Anyway I share this story because when I use to have cable. I use to love hgtv I always use to watch those home buying shows in NYC and Cali. You know where the condo was 1 million dollar plus or so. And I would always see white folks, Asians and lots of homo sexuals before the age of 33 having the ability to buy these condos. And to add insult to injury they would have regular job titles computer programmer, accountant, lab tech and etc. I thought about all the black folks I graduated college with 1 had a job making 6 figures. He was a financial advisor which is basically a glorified sales person. But that show confirmed to me the only way I will have the option to live is through entrepreneurship. All the black dudes I knew or seen doing well before 35, owned their own business.. Entrepreneurship will even out the playing field preceded by knowledge. This ain’t a black and white post just a exposure thing. I think all parents should expose their kids to sells at a young age. Saless is the Highest paid profession in the world. And when that child gets older they will thank you for giving them vision, ambition and a hard work ethic. Side note I no longer have cable because I had to turn off the tv and turn on my life.
