This CIAA Weekend makes 6 years I been living here. For those of you who dont know its CIAA is a BIG Basketball tournament they been having in Charlotte for the past years. I never told my family this but when I moved down here I had no place to stay. I did not want them to worry about me. I just knew I had to get out of New Jersey. My moving truck was coming down like 5 days after me. lol I was 24 with a degree and figured I had the world by the balls. Anyway I went in thinking it cant be hard to get a Apartment. It has to be rather simple. LEts just say I was blessed that it was 2008 and we were in a big recession. Anyway I went and got a motel room. Car full of everything including a flat screen in the back. I dropped my things off and went down town to enjoy CIAA besides who has time to realize they are Homeless when its CIAA Weekend. Anyway I looked for a apt Saturday and found something Sunday. That I was able to move in Immediately the next day. I was able to overcome adversity also In a hell of a area for 579.00 1 bedroom, outdoor pool, picnic area, 24 fitness center and 24 hour laundry room. Boy before I left some of my friends figured I be back in a year. Some folks said I would end up at wal mart making 8 bucks a hour.
Anyway alot happened in those 6 years its crazy. The next year in 09 CIAA all my immediate friends came down. We are more like family. I was working in a call center miserable making 12 bucks a hour. Eating humble pie Every time I seen my paycheck. I did not care because I had a mean social life. All I did was party and meet women. I was just happy to have my own apt. Anyway that year was the best year ever seeing my friends that weekend. They came down with BMW 650 , Infiniti and Benzes. We talked about OUR boy Clay getting killed. Also my main man West could not wait to show me his 10k Breitling watch he just brought. lol He said its cool but it aint like Bro’s. Our other friend paid 30k for his Breitling watch. My man Nell said bro you got to see this Gucci Leather. This coat was tight he paid 3k for it. My other man said he has to go to Vegas to get his because thats the only store in America that had his size. He asked me where do you shop, I said I dont I just pick up stuff from the outlet where its cheap. Now mind you we are about 25-26 years old. Some of you are thinking How could people be so dumb? I will not blame the environment. Because if you seen where we were from you would not see nice things. So we were very foolish. Anyway We rode around town looking for a place to party. I kept getting them lost. I only been in town a year so I did not know Charlotte so well. lol We went to club 1 club and they wanted like 100 bucks because they had T-shirts. I told them “Hell no yall aint paying that”. This place is 20 bucks any other time. My man Nell said bro I got you dont worry about it. I said “Hell no we are not going here”. My pride and the fact I was living on my own made me more logical. Man we had a ball that weekend. Alot classic moments.
1 month later the Majority of them went to Jail in a Big investigation. I know people Judge folks who are felons but these guys were Really good people. They were businessmen in the wrong business due to lack of knowledge and not seeing past their current circumstances. Anyway I seen my man West like 1 or 2 times after that for CIAA. And when I visited home I made sure I would see him and talk. Unfortunately he was killed in 2011. He was 27 but dude lived a full life. He took his Father to Dominican republic and everything. That was his back yard. He offered a few times to pay for me to go while I was living here in Charlotte. But My pride would not let me do it. His death is one of the reasons I stopped hoarding money and now I am more open to enjoying life. I regret not going to DR. I took him for granted thinking he would be here forever. We were only kids BUT THE STREETS DONT LOVE YOU THEY JUST TAKE YOU AWAY FROM THE PEOPLE THAT DO. I still speak to them and write them when I can. Like 2 years ago when my goal was to make 10k in a month. I finally hit it because I figured 10k you are rich. I brought their kids tickets to see the Nets before they left Newark and went to Brooklyn. Im hoping to that inner city kid that is reading gets the message of this which is IF YOU DONT LIKE THE CARDS YOU WAS DEALT SOMETIMES YOU TO RESHUFFLE THE DECK. I relocated 6 years ago and I must say I was blessed. The world is bigger then your block, your hood and your city. Dont be afriad to Overcome Adversity.
